Dr. Elbassiouny – Professional Biography
He founded the Interventional Neurology Unit at the Cardiovascular Hospital. He is currently the Director of Ain Shams University Stroke Center – Hany Aref Unit. He also serves as Chairman of the Scientific Council of Neurology Specialty within the Egyptian Fellowship Program, Assistant Secretary-General of the Egyptian Society of Neurology, Psychiatry, and Neurosurgery. Additionally, he serves as a Consultant Neurologist to the CEO of the General Authority of Health Insurance in Egypt.
Dr. Elbassiouny earned his M.B.B.Ch. and M.Sc. (Neurology) with distinction from Ain Shams University, followed by an MD in Neurology (2008). He subsequently trained in cardiology catheterization at Ain Shams University (2008–2010) and completed a fellowship in Endovascular Neurointervention at Zurich University Hospital (2010–2011).
His academic trajectory advanced from resident and assistant lecturer to lecturer and professor of neurology, with multiple visiting professorships across Egyptian universities and teaching hospitals. He has extensive expertise in endovascular neurointervention, having performed thousands of procedures, including AVMs, cranial dural AVFs, tumor embolization, spinal vascular malformations, carotid stenting, intra-arterial fibrinolysis, and mechanical thrombectomy.
His contributions extend to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as super-selective Wada testing, inferior petrosal sinus sampling, and embolization of skull base tumors. Beyond his university roles, Dr. Elbassiouny holds leadership positions in major private and insurance hospitals, including founding the Neurology Department at Nasr City Hospital (Medical Insurance), and directing neurology and interventional neurology services at Wady El Nile and Cairo Specialized Hospitals (Cleopatra Group). He is also a consultant to several leading tertiary centers such as Dar El Fouad, Nile Badawi, and Maadi Military Hospital.
Dr. Elbassiouny trained at eminent European centers in Zurich, Bern, and Paris, and has contributed to numerous international publications. He has supervised MD theses across almost all Egyptian universities, reflecting his significant academic and mentorship roles.
